Education

An educated workforce is one of the most important factors that makes an area advantageous for businesses. North Houston residents have their choice of some of the best educational institutions available.  The demand for learning both technical and academic topics has escalated at a rapid rate, and institutions in north Houston have responded to meet that market.

The booklet 2010 North Houston Educational Profiles will provide complete information regarding public education in Texas, a map of North Houston area independent school districts, facts and figures on each school district, information about the Lone Star College System and its University Partners, along with a list of private schools.  For a copy of the complete booklet, click on the following link: North Houston Educational Profiles

Lone Star College System

In October 1972, voters in the Aldine, Humble and Spring independent school districts elected to create a Union Junior College District, which became known as North Harris County College. The college opened its doors in the fall of 1973 with a 15-member staff and 613 students.  Today, Lone Star College System (LSCS) has become one of the fastest growing college systems in the nation, encompassing a geographic area that spans 11 school districts, 1,400 square miles, and more than 1.6 million residents.

More than 62,000 students were enrolled in credit classes in spring 2010 with an additional 20,000-plus enrolled in continuing education courses.  LSCS serves this dynamic area with five comprehensive colleges, six satellite centers, and two university centers.  Lone Star College campuses are LSC-CyFair, LSC-Kingwood, LSC-Montgomery, LSC-North Harris, and LSC-Tomball.

LSCS is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, the second largest, and the fastest-growing community college system in Texas.  Lone Star College System is the top producer of associate degrees among the 50 community colleges in Texas.   It is the primary provider of nurses and health care workers, and the leading provider of fire fighters and EMT’s in the north Houston area.  LSCS is also the third largest provider of computer training in the Houston area.

LSCS offers academic courses for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, as well as programs that lead directly to relevant jobs within two years or less.  Four-year degree programs are available at both the LSC-University Center and LSC- University Park campuses.  Known for innovative programs, LSCS created these campuses as partnerships with universities and colleges to provide bachelor's and master's degrees, and continuing professional studies to the Lone Star College System service area.

Lone Star College System stands ready to continue meeting the challenges and opportunities ahead. The focus of the system remains the same – to provide quality educational opportunities for the successful development of knowledge, skills and attitudes in a rapidly changing world.
